Milling machine: safety measures and risks

The milling cnc machine is a type of machine that requires a series of safety measuresto be taken into account, as there are several risk factors for the people who work with it.

It is common that, over time, we tend to relax and become more confident when using our milling machines on a daily basis, but any mistake can have disastrous consequences for our physical integrity.

For this reason, we are going to remind you of the risk factors and how you can prevent them with the appropriate safety measures.

What's more, in this downloadable document below you will find an ideal guide to print out and also find out in detail what health measures are necessary to prevent COVID-19 in your workshop:

Risk factors of a milling machine

  1. Projection of particles and fragments, e.g. chips or fragments of workpiece and/or milling cutter.
  2. Atrapamiento and/or blows by or between objects, such as slides, pulleys, gears, workpiece, cutter, etc.
  3. Blows and cuts by objects and tools (workpiece and milling cutter).
  4. Falling of parts and/or materials during handling.
  5. People falling on the same level due to slipping, tripping, etc.
  6. Exposure to harmful substances..
  7. Emission of vapours, dust and gases.
  8. Exposure to electrical contacts.
  9. Noise and/or vibrations.
  10. Thermal contacts (due to red hot chips).

Safety precautions when using a milling machine

In the following we will distinguish the safety measures in various aspects to be taken into account when handling a milling machine.

Safety measures for personal protective clothing and equipment

  • The sleeves of overalls or gowns should be elasticated or, failing this, rolled up above the elbows
  • It is not recommended to wear gloves when working on machines with tools or moving parts such as milling machines, as the glove increases the risk of trapping and dragging the hand.
  • Wear safety goggles..
  • The Safety boots will have reinforced toecaps.
  • Use of a cap for people with long hair, and the use of ties, scarves, bracelets, necklaces, rings, etc. is forbidden.

Safety precautions for handling the milling machine

  • Manipular amb with extreme care the milling tools, as they have very sharp lips.
  • Ensure that the tool is correctly mounted at spindle.
  • Ensure the correct direction of rotation of the tool.
  • Make sure that nobody activates the spindle rotation while changing the position of the spindle belt.
  • Ensure the that the workpiece is correctly clamped.
  • Work with all the safety systems available on the CNC milling machine.
  • Remove swarf with a brush, hook or compressed air.

Hygiene measures for milling machines

  • Keep the work table clear of hand tools, etc.
  • The milling machine must be kept in a perfect state of repair, clean and properly greased.
  • Cuidar to keep tools, equipment and accessories tidy and tidy. There must be a place for everything and everything in its place.
  • The work area and the vicinity of the milling machine must be kept clean and free of obstacles and oil stains.
  • The Fallen and scattered objects can cause dangerous trips and slips and should be picked up before this happens.
  • The Shavings should be removed regularly, without waiting until the end of the day, using a brush for dry shavings and a squeegee for wet or oily shavings.
  • Tools should be stored in a cupboard or suitable place. No loose tools or objects should be left on the milling machine.
  • Both blanks and machined parts should be stacked n a safe and orderly manner, or suitable containers should be used if the parts are small.
  • A wide aisle shall be proveided for entry and exit to and from the milling machine.
  • Materials must not be stacked behind the operator
  • Remove the escombraries, rags, etc., soaked in oil or grease, which can easily catch fire, and dispose of them in suitable containers.

Other safety measures

  • The milling machine must have an emergency stop within immediate reach of the operator and an impact protection shield between the milling machine and the operator.
  • The electrical circuit of the milling machine must be earthed, and the electrical cabinet to which the milling machine is connected must be fitted with a residual current circuit breaker.
  • Always stop stop the milling machine before taking measurements.
  • Store the milling cutters in suitable locations .
  • Place and secure the head protection covers in their correct position.
  • Do not start a machine with raised head protection covers.
  • Safety scanner: Secure danger zones, access points or points of operation. Safety laser scanners can be used in all areas of personal protection in an efficient and versatile manner. Thanks to the individual protective fields of any shape and their compact design, these scanners can be mounted in a very flexible position. The safety radius is 90° ("L").
